This isn’t me! … or is it? What do you think?

This isn’t me! … or is it?  What do you think?

Does this inner/outer dialogue sound familiar…

“This isn’t me!

…Or is it?

…What do you think?”

If you are nodding your head yes then congratulations, you are growing!

The women who come to The Women’s Business Momentum Center for direction, focus, guidance in their business have one big think in common.

They are hungry!  Starving in fact and sometimes they don’t even know what they are hungry for they just know they are hungry, they can feel it.

A big part of building a business is feeling into what is the right/next direction to move into.  I absolutely love that the Disney movie, Finding Dory is all about this.

What would Dory do, the message we hear resounding in the Finding Dory movie points to Dory’s unconscious way of navigating successfully in her world.

Dory’s way of being involves two simple steps:

  1. She looks around and notices her choices.  “Kelp, open sea”
  2. She feels into what feels best to her in that moment and follows her intuition.  “I like kelp”

Most of you are familiar with this way of showing up in your world and are already using it successfully.

It works beautifully in business.  You can do a mind map to discover all the choices or possibilities and then you can use your intuition to point you one way or another.

What I want to remind us all of today though is that, that is not the end of the conversation.

Dory swam and followed her intuition however she did doubt herself as well just like we all do on our journeys.

We may use our intuition to decide on new pricing, a new business model or to define who we most enjoying working with.  Then 9 times out of 10 we will have an inner dialogue something along the lines of “this feels great I love this… I’m not sure about this…. what do you think?”

How you respond to this dialogue is critical, it actually dictates your outcome MORE than the choice you originally made!  It’s normal to doubt ourselves.  In fact this is how we get more anchored and confident in our choices.   However if while we are in this fragile state of doubt we expose ourselves to an influence that pushes us towards it’s point of view rather than encouraging us to get more curious and find our own answers then we can end up taking a wrong turn.  You can and should seek out community, guidance and support to help you figure it out, but it is important that the influence you seek does not use it’s own agenda to shape your decision.  Instead you want an influence that holds the space for you to figuring it out and encourages you to do so by asking questions not just giving answers.

Recently I was reminded of this when I made a dramatic change to my hair.  I have been a bright red head for over a decade now and recently felt a desire to go back to my natural dark brown color.  During the process my hair reacted and soaked up the color so much it turned black,

I was shocked, pushed back, looked in the mirror and hated it!  My first reaction… “This isn’t me!”

I was forced to sit with my new look as it couldn’t be corrected for several days.  During that time I began to style it and my push back and resistance lessened.  My inner dialogue shifted to… “Or is it?”

As I got more comfortable I turned to my trusted tribe.  “What do you think?”  I asked them.  I knew from years of experience that they could be trusted as truth speakers.  I also knew they would ask me questions such as “could it be that you need to get used to this?” that would open up more inquiry within me.

As we move into September the energy of back to the school of life is thick in the air.  Even if you do not have children the season is shifting and I see clients questioning and using curiosity as the energy source to drive them forward into this new segment of the year and their business.  Know that the doubt and perhaps uncertainty you may feel is GROWTH!  Uncomfortableness is the #1 sign of GROWTH and as you build your business you will move in and out of it frequently.

If you would like to nurture your uncomforableness and  ignite curiosity about what the rest of 2017 might hold for you perhaps start by getting curious about where you have been and where you might be going this month.  A great tool to support you and hold the space for this is Monthly Momentum.

Oh and by the way…. the hair is staying black or as the ladies titled it “Cherry Coke”, for now!
